In October, after eight and a half years at Amazon, I decided to leave. If you look at the update at the top of this post, you’ll see why.
Bye to Big Tech
Big tech used to be exciting and interesting, but the behavior of big tech just has been getting worse. Moreover, the CEOs of these trillion-dollar giants don’t seem to care about the future of their customers or employees. They only seek to please shareholders, at the expense of the democracy and free market that allowed them to succeed and flourish.
What I’m Looking For
Earlier this year I started looking for work, focusing on much smaller companies. I’m not interested in being on the ground floor of a startup anymore. I’ve been interviewing with companies that have already found product/market fit, and have found success, and are now feeling the architectural strain of that success. So I’ll be joining one of them and assist in improving the architecture so we can scale to better serve the customer.
Doing Something Good
I don’t know if there will ever be another company like Zappos. But I also don’t need it. I just want to work somewhere that makes the world a little better in its own way. The company I work for doesn’t need to save the world. If I can contribute to a little more happiness, remove a little stress, and help someone breathe a calming breath, it’s enough.
What’s After That?
I want to keep experimenting with AI for development. It’s not perfect, but it’s dang impressive. I’ll also keep pursuing other hobbies as well, like digital painting on the iPad using Procreate, which is absolutely super. I took up drawing seriously in 2017, and moved into painting on the iPad around 2023.
Thanks for reading! More to come soon.
